Study

Users can voluntarily participate in a scientific study by submitting their processed data from Safari's Intelligent Tracking Prevention (ITP) observations database to us. The study aims to evaluate and audit its effectiveness and to analyze web tracking and privacy practices on the web. As ITP classifies trackers based on the user's browsing history, classified websites differ from user to user. Therefore, we collect data from multiple users to obtain a comprehensive overview of the tracking landscape on the web as observed by Safari's ITP.

If you consent to participate in the study, we collect a pseudonymized subset of observed domains to our server, which is aggregated and then analysed as part of the study. With this data, it is impossible for us to identify individual study participants. You will be asked at no point of the study to disclose your name or other unambiguous information about yourself.

Data Collection

In the context of this study, the following information will be collected.

Local Processing (On Device)

This website processes Safari's Intelligent Tracking Prevention (ITP) observations database directly in your browser on your device. This observations database is automatically generated by Safari and contains the following information about your browsing behavior.

The data is only in the browser memory and is not stored persistently. It is purged when closing the browser tab.

Data Donation (Sent To Our Server)

If you voluntarily participate in our study, the website reports a filtered subset of the observations database.

We pseudonymize the data by assigning a random identifier to your data. This identifier cannot be linked back to you. If you wish to delete your donated data or object to its usage, share this identifier with us via email. We do not collect any other personal information, such as your IP address.

Third Parties

This website contains no advertisements, tracking scripts, analytics frameworks, or any other external resources. Your donated data is used exclusively for academic research and will never be shared with third parties.

Personal Data

Personal data collected are: None.

Data Access

This website only processes the Safari's Intelligent Tracking Prevention (ITP) observations database you provide. For our study, you only share a pseudonymized subset of this database with us if you voluntarily choose to do so.

Data Storage and Usage

The data collected as part of our study is sent to a server hosted by the Secure Mobile Networking Lab of TU Darmstadt. Only designated team members have access to it. All data is deleted after the end of the study but not later than two years after collection. Other websites, services, or third parties cannot access the data on your device or on our server.

Data storage takes place in a form which does not allow conclusions about your person, meaning that all data will be pseudonymized. This declaration of consent will be stored separately from the data which is collected during the study and will be destroyed together with the collected data.

Purpose of Usage

The data on your device is only used to provide the functionality of this website. This includes processing and visualizing the data.

The data donated as part of the study is used solely for scientific research purposes.

Sharing of User Data

Identifiable user data is not shared with us or with any third party.
Anonymized user data gathered during our study can be published in an aggregated form. The aggregated data does not allow the identification of any user.

Duration of Storage

The website's local unprocessed data is stored until the browser tab is closed.
Data donated as part of the study is stored for the duration of the study and will be deleted no later than two years after the end of the study.

Your Rights as a User

Your participation in this study is voluntary. You can withdraw from participation at any point of time or withdraw your consent without facing any disadvantages.

Information

You have the right to view your personal information processed by us. If you wish to do so, please share the assigned identifier of your data donation with us via email.

Deletion of Data

If you wish to delete all unprocessed data collected by this website locally on your device, it is sufficient to close the browser tab. Data collected as part of the study is anonymized and can only be deleted by sharing the local identifier of each uploaded data point with us. Those identifiers are stored on your device and must be emailed to us.

Right of Objection

You have the right to object to the use of the data. If you wish to do so, please share the assigned identifier of your data donation with us via email.
